Jerry Springer’s Biography
He was born in Highgate, London when he was a refuge during the bombings of World War II and grew up in Chandos Road, East Finchley. His parents, Margot (née Kallmann, a bank assistant) and Richard Springer (owner of a shoe store) were Jewish refugees fleeing from Landsberg an der Warthe (today Gorzów Wielkopolski), his maternal grandmother, Marie Kallmann, died gassed in Chelmno, and the paternal, Selma Springer, in Theresienstadt. In January of 1949, Springer emigrated with his sister Evelyn and her parents to the United States, where they lived in an apartment in Kew Gardens, Queens. He graduated law at Tulane University with a doctorate from Northwestern University.
He was elected mayor of Cincinnati in 1971, a post he resigned after admitting to having been with a prostitute.
His journalistic career began as a student at Tulane University and was later hired as a commentator for the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati.
He is married to Micki Velton since 1973.
