Jermaine Stewart (Columbus, Ohio, September 7, 1957 – Homewood, Illinois, March 17, 1997) was an American pop and blues singer, known for his commercial hit “We Do not Have to Take Our Clothes Off »(from the 1986 Frantic Romantic album), which reached # 2 in the United Kingdom and Canada. He also reached # 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. He ventured extensively into the rhythm & amp; blues.

Stewart, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, son of the couple composed of Ethel M. and Eugene Stewart, the family moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1972, where he reached his first steps in the entertainment career. He finally achieved recognition as a dancer on the television show Soul Train, which was filmed in Chicago. There he met other fellow dancers, among whom were Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels. The trio became close friends and auditioned to become members of the Shalamar group, which was created by the founder of Soul Train Don Cornelius and agent Dick Griffey. Watley and Daniels were selected for the group as a backup / semi-lead vocalist while Steward auditioned for the role of lead vocalist, who lost to Howard Hewett. Later in a show in London, he met Mikey Craig of the Culture Club group. Craig himself helped him in his training as a singer by editing a demo, and even singing as a chorus singer with Culture Club when they recorded the song ‘Miss Me Blind’. As a result of all this, the group helped him land a record deal with Arista Records.
