Defined as a pacifist and republican, he is a vegetarian and uses the bicycle for his travels. He regularly collaborates in international Human Rights campaigns. He participated in the Stop the War Coalition against the Iraq War and in the Solidarity with Palestine campaign; he is also vice president of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. After the scandal that broke out in 2009 in Great Britain on the expenses of the parliamentarians, and the comparison was made between all of them, Corbyn turned out to be the one who requested the lowest reimbursement of function expenses in the period from May to August 2010. < / p>

Jeremy Corbyn’s Biography

He was born in Chippenham in the county of Wiltshire in the south of England. His parents, David, an electrical engineer, and Naomi, a teacher of mathematics, were pacifists and met during the Spanish Civil War, he is the brother of Piers Corbyn, an astrophysicist, meteorologist and businessman skeptical of climate change.

He studied at the Adams’ Grammar School in Shropshire. After finishing high school, at age 18, he worked for two years in a development aid organization in Jamaica, then returned to Britain and worked for union organizations. He began his political activism by participating in the demonstrations of the 1960s against the Vietnam War during his time as a student at the Polytechnic North London, which he left after a discussion with his tutors about the curriculum.

Political trajectory

He started his political militancy in the union world. At age 25, in 1974, he was elected councilor of the London Borough of Haringey, a position he held until the parliamentary elections of 1983 when he won a seat as a member in the House of Commons for the constituency of Islington North in London. the House of Commons Corbyn has voted on numerous occasions without following the guidelines of the Labor Party; for that reason he is considered one of the most rebellious British parliamentarians.

From his seat, he has maintained activism in different causes for more than 30 years, from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the unity of Ireland, Palestine, to the fight against apartheid: in 1984 he was arrested during a demonstration He protested at the South African Embassy and joined the protest for the sale of arms to Saddam Hussein. He invited Gerry Adams and Sinn Féin to the House of Commons, and in 1987 he observed a minute of silence for the 8 members of the IRA killed by the SAS in the Loughgall ambush, which generated an important controversy. In 1999, he supported Amnesty International’s campaign to extradite the ex-dictator and former Chilean senator Augusto Pinochet to Spain. During the Labor government of Tony Blair (1997-2007), he publicly denounced his actions accusing him of violating Human Rights and public liberties, especially with those who requested political asylum.

Following the resignation of Ed Miliband after the 2015 general election, he presented his candidacy to lead the Labor Party, starting as the candidate with the lowest support figures among the four that attended -Liz Kendall, Andy Burnham and Yvette Cooper – but at the end of July she was leading the polls, favoring the reform of the election mode for the new leader, which gives the sympathizers the same power as militants and trade unionists. September 2015 was elected as the new Labor leader, with 60 percent of the votes, and replaced Ed Miliband. According to the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, the veteran politician achieved 251,000 of the 422,000 votes. After the election of Corbyn, Iain McNicol, General Secretary of Labor, reported that the next day, only in 24 hours, 15,000 people they joined the party.
