Jeff Nichols (Little Rock, Arkansas, December 7, 1978) is an American film director and screenwriter.
Jeff Nichols’s Biography
Nichols studied film at the School of Arts at the University of North Carolina. He wrote the screenplay for the movie Shotgun Stories, his first script, with actor Michael Shannon, and he shot it with a budget of only $ 250,000. It premiered in 2007.
He later wrote and directed Take Shelter (2011), an independent production also starring Michael Shannon. Mud (2012), his third film, starred Matthew McConaughey, and competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. That same year, Nichols was honored with the presidency of the Jury of the 7th Rome Film Festival .
Midnight Special (2016), is a science fiction film with which he won the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin Film Festival. In his review of Midnight Special, Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers said that “Arkansas youth, Nichols, 37, is already on the side of the best American directors of his generation.”
Most recently, he directed the drama Loving, a film about the historic American civil rights case Loving v. Virginia, which premiered on November 4, 2016 in the United States.
