His personal interest in war is visible in many of his lyrics, especially in the song «Angel of Death».

Hanneman was influenced by punk music, so he went on to say that the genre influenced Slayer’s sound to make his music faster and more aggressive. Hanneman contributed lyrics and music to all of Slayer’s albums, as well as composing the songs “Raining Blood,” “War Ensemble,” “Seasons in the Abyss,” and “Angel of Death,” which are popular at the band’s concerts. Jeff_Hanneman’s Biography

Hanneman was born on January 31, 1964 in Oakland, California and raised in Long Beach, California in a family full of war veterans; his father fought in Normandy during World War II and his brothers in Vietnam. War was a recurring theme when sitting at the dinner table in the Hanneman family. War movies were very popular on television at the time, so Jeff and his brothers made scale models of tanks and planes in their spare time. For all this, his fondness for war and military issues are attributed to his childhood.

In 1981, Jeff met Kerry King, while the latter was testing for a band. After the tests, they began to get to know each other and play songs by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Slayer was born when King asked him “And why do not we start our own band?”, To which Hanneman replied “Fuck yeah!” In 1982, Hanneman, Dave Lombardo and Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Rocky George started a project Parallel punk rock called Pap Smear – the band was going to start recording when Slayer’s record producer Rick Rubin persuaded him not to do it, saying “Ahhhh, do not do it man – this kind of thing makes bands dissolve “Hanneman accepted the advice, and then used two of the songs he had prepared for the 1996 Slayer album Undisputed Attitude.

In 1997 Hanneman married Kathryn, whom he met in the early 1980s. They had no children and lived in Los Angeles not far from King.Kathryn stays home when Slayer goes on tour; Hanneman said he prefers it, saying that when he returns home, “he’s as good as new.” Kathryn has only toured the band twice in more than twenty years of career.

Hanneman and Slayer vocalist Tom Araya were former cocaine abusers and pill abusers who decided to quit when they realized that “it can only lead to death or something similar, it’s getting too far”.

At the beginning of 2011, Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis. According to the band, the doctors surely went for a spider bite. They decided to start the tour that began on February 26, 2011, hiring Gary Holt (Exodus guitarist) until his recovery, after which Holt was replaced by Pat O’Brien due to the commitments of the former with his usual band.

Interest in Nazi history

The Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross.

Hanneman’s interest in the medals of the Second World War and Nazi Germany is present in his lyrics. His interest in National Socialism began when his father gave him some medals, including a usurped to a dead German soldier, his most coveted piece is a Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, which he bought from a follower of Slayer for $ 1000. During a tour with Motörhead, Hanneman discovered the interest of Motörhead vocalist Lemmy towards the medals, so they both talked about designs for medals, weapons and tactics used by the Wehrmacht.

Hanneman’s lyrics to “Angel of Death” led the band to be accused of being Nazi sympathizers, Hanneman defended himself saying “nothing I write in those letters says anything about being a bad man, because for me – well, is not that obvious? I should not have to explain that to you. “The band has said many times that they do not approve of Nazism and that they are simply interested in the subject.

Hanneman left the band in 2011 after suffering a necrotizing fasciitis and died on May 2, 2013 at a hospital in Southern California, where he was hospitalized for a liver deficiency, and that same day Slayer announced the following:
