Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Roanne, Loire, 1953) is a screenwriter and director of French cinema.
Born on September 3, 1953 in the city of Roanne, Loire in the Rhône-Alpes region. He started in the art of management at age 17, when he bought his first camera. He created several shorts while studying animation at the Cinémation Studios. He became friends with Marc Caro, a designer and comic artist who would become his long-time collaborator and co-director. Jeunet and Caro would direct several award-winning animation films.
His first film with real people was The Bunker of the Last Gunshots (1981), a short film about soldiers in a futuristic world. Jeunet has also directed several commercials and music videos, such as Zoolook by Jean Michel Jarre (again with Marc Caro). Most of his early films are part of the genre of retro-futurist dystopia, culminating in the film The City of Lost Children of 1995.
His most popular film is Amélie, which won five Oscars and other film awards.
His penultimate feature film, Micmacs à tire-larigot, starring Danny Boon, is a comedy that deals with arms trafficking.
He has also directed numerous commercials, including “Train de nuit”, 2’25 “, for Chanel No. 5 starring Audrey Tautou.
