Jason René Castro (born March 25, 1987) is a Colombian-American singer and the third finalist of the seventh season of the American Idol series. Jason Castro’s debut album with Atlantic Records came out in early 2009.
Born in Dallas, he grew up in Rowlett, and currently resides in Rowlett, Texas. His parents, René and Betsy Castro, are originally from Colombia, with Jason being the first person in his family to be born in the United States, followed by his brother Michael and his sister Jackeline. He auditioned for American Idol in Dallas, Texas, and finished fourth in the competition. He did not appear on television until the finals due to legal restrictions on the songs he chose to play in the playoffs.
Jason is the first contestant in the history of American Idol who sang and played an instrument in the televised audition. Castro played the guitar in his first televised appearance in which he sang “What a Day for a Daydream” accompanied by his guitar. Jason also played Ukulele in his performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Castro sang in three languages during the competition; English, Spanish and French.
