Later on, she worked on important pieces such as Panama Hattie, Over 21 and Present Laughter, and in 1947 she made her film debut with the film Tycoon, under the stage name of Jane Adrian. Ruth Gordon insisted that she change her name, finally deciding to call herself Jan Sterling. One of the most outstanding roles of Sterling was the one he did in Belinda (1948). Alternating his film performances with television, Sterling took part in several television series in the 1950s while working on films such as Caged (1950), Mystery Street (1950), The Mating Season (1951), Ace in the Hole ( 1951), Flesh and Fury (1952), The Human Jungle (1954), and Female on the Beach (1955).

Sterling’s marriage to John Merivale ended in divorce. Her career began to decline after the death of her second husband, actor Paul Douglas, in 1959, beginning in the seventies a lasting relationship with Sam Wanamaker. Inactive for almost two decades, he appeared at the Cinecon Film Festival in Los Angeles in 2001.
The last years of Sterling’s life were marked by poor health. He suffered from diabetes, suffered a hip fracture and several strokes.
