Jan Neruda [& nbsp; jan ‘nɛruda ] (Prague, 9 July 1834 – August 22, 1891) was a Czech poet, storyteller, dramatist and novelist, one of the main representatives of Czech realism and a member of the so-called School of May. Jan Neruda’s Biography

Born in the Prague district of Malá Strana (translated “The small neighborhood”), whose main street now bears his name, in 1845 he studied high school at the Malá Strana school (malostranské gymnasium) and in 1850 at the academic college ( akademické gymnasium). Following in his father’s footsteps, he tried twice to enter the law faculty without success.

He had to do some work as a clerk and later wrote for the newspapers Národní listy (National sheets), Obrazy domova (Domestic views), Čas (Time), Kwěty (Flowers) and founded, together with Viteslav Hálek, the Lumír magazine .

He maintained a passionate platonic relationship with the writer Karolina Světlá, which she ended abruptly and unilaterally in 1862, when she became aware of her husband and provoked the consequent scandal in Czech artistic circles.

He was the introducer of the genre of the serial in the Czech press. In 1871 he traveled to Germany, France, Italy, Greece and Egypt.

His travel books abound in pertinent and sharp observations, shows an observant attentive to the details.
