James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) was an author, politician, diplomat, critic, journalist, poet, anthologist, educator, lawyer, song writer, human rights activist and prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Johnson is most remembered for his work as a writer, which includes novels, poems and folklore collections. He was also one of the first African-American professors at the University of New York. Later he was a professor of creative literature at Fisk University.
