James Taylor’s Biography

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Taylor’s career began in the mid-1960s, but he found his audience in the early seventies singing soft and sensitive acoustic songs. Taylor was part of a wave of suave singer-songwriters that includes Carole King, Joni Mitchell, John Denver, Jackson Browne and Carly Simon, whom she married later. It was precisely Taylor’s commercial success that opened the way for this entire generation of singer-songwriters.

As a musician, he has participated in numerous recordings as acoustic guitarist and vocalist even before ascending to fame, as in the case of LP Tapestry, by Carole King. His particular Fingerpicking style, together with his constant Hammer-on and pull-off of the strings prima (Mi) and second (Si), at the same time that abundant open chords of suspended quarters has been a benchmark of acoustic guitarists since the 70s Admired as a musician, he has surrounded himself in recordings as well as in tours always of great figures such as Larry Goldings, Steve Gadd, Danny Kortchmar, Michael Brecker, Michael Landau, David Sanborn, Arnold McCuller and many others. Since December 17, 2010, he started on his official website guitar lessons to show his technique to the general public, being the first to have perfected these recordings with a camera inside and outside the guitar simultaneously, which show both the fingering of the left hand as the right, with total accuracy.

His first album, James Taylor (1968), was the first album published by The Beatles record label, Apple Records, and had the collaboration of George Harrison and Paul McCartney, although only McCartney appears in the credits.

His first success in reaching the number 10 (Top 10 hit) in the American charts was «Fire and Rain», an introspective song whose three stanzas deal with different stages of the artist’s life, including his stay in a mental hospital where he was hospitalized to recover from episodes of anxiety increased with the consumption of drugs, which he would definitely overcome in the 80s, as he himself has confessed.

The following LP released by the artist sold more than a million copies, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon, which included the single “You’ve Got a Friend”, song written by his good friend Carole King. For this recording he won a Grammy in 1971 for the best male pop singer. In 1972, Taylor again won a Gold Record for the sales of his LP One Man Dog, followed in 1973 by his LP Walking Man. The Gorilla album (1975) included two other great hits for the musical charts in the United States. : «How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)», by Holland-Dozier-Holland and «Mexico». Following his last album with Warner Brothers, his album In the Pocket, Taylor changed his record company, signing with Columbia Records and releasing some of his most successful albums: JT (1977) a double platinum album; Flag (1979); Dad Loves His Work (1981); That’s Why I’m Here (1985); Never Die Young (1988); New Moon Shine (1991); the double disc Live (1993); in (1994) lends his voice to episode 96 of the fifth season of The Simpsons in which he plays himself, singing an altered version of “You’ve got a friend” specifically for the episode, Hourglass (1998), then winning his first Grammy for the best pop album of the year; and October Road (2002), all platinum albums.

The US National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected him as his MusiCares Character of the Year in 2006, and his new CD, One Man Band (2007), was nominated for the Emmy Awards.

In 2006, Taylor performed the song Our Town, written by Randy Newman, from the Pixar movie, Cars. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2006 Oscars.

In 2009 he made an appearance in the movie Funny People with Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann, although his first appearance in the cinema came from the director Monte Hellman, in the movie Two-Lane Blacktop, of which he was the protagonist, although he was not very successful.

In the year 2000 Taylor entered on his own merits in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2011 he received the National Medal of Arts 2010 from the President of the United States Barack Obama at a ceremony in the White House, and in 2012 he received the distinction of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Government of France Other American artists who have received this award are: Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Van Morrison, Frederica von Stade, Philip Glass, Juanes, Kylie Minogue or Andre Rieu.
