First years

Born in Ballymena (County of Antrim), Nesbitt grew up in Broughshane and Coleraine (both in the county of Derry), always without leaving Northern Ireland. He wanted to be a teacher, like his father, so he started studying French at the University of Ulster. He abandoned them a year later when he decided to become an actor, so he entered the Central School of Drama and Diction in London. After his graduation, in 1987, he spent several years as a theater actor, in very varied works, from the musical Up on the Roof (1987, 1989) to the political drama Paddywack (1994). He made his feature film debut as talent agent Fintan O’Donnell in Hear My Song (1991).


Nesbitt had his prominent role on television when he played Adam Williams in the romantic comedy drama Cold Feet (ITV, 1998-2003), which won a British Comedy Award, a Television and Radio Industries Club Award and a National Television Award . His first significant role in the cinema was played by farmer “Pig” Finn in Waking Ned (1998). Along with the rest of the cast, Nesbitt was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award. In Lucky Break (2001), he made his debut as a movie star, playing prisoner Jimmy Hands. The following year, he personified Ivan Cooper in the television film Bloody Sunday, about the 1972 Derry massacre. The film marked a turning point in his career, as it allowed him to leave behind his previous comic roles. He won a British Independent Film Award and was nominated for best actor by the British Academy Television.

Nesbitt has also starred in Murphy’s Law (BBC One, 2003-2007) as Detective Tommy Murphy, a role that screenwriter Colin Bateman created especially for him. For the paper she won two Irish Film & amp; Television (IFTA). In 2004, he starred in the real-life drama Wall of Silence as the father of a boy who had been murdered, getting another IFTA nomination. In 2007, he played the double role of Tom Jackman and Mr Hyde in the Jekyll series, written by Steven Moffat, and won a Golden Globe Award nomination in 2008. Nesbitt has since made several dramatic roles; starred in Five Minutes of Heaven (2009) with Liam Neeson, was one of the three protagonists of the miniseries Occupation (2009) and starred in his first horror film, Outcast, in 2010. In that same year he played a writer in the film The way.

In 2012 he played the dwarf Bofur in the movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and based on The Hobbit, a novel by J. R. R. Tolkien. A year later he resumed the character in the second film, The Desolation of Smaug and in 2014 he returned to play it in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Personal life

Nesbitt is married to the actress Sonia Forbes-Adam, with whom he has two daughters, Peggy and Mary Nesbitt, who made a cameo in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, playing the daughters of Bardo. Sponsor numerous charitable foundations.
