James Naismith (Almonte, Canada, November 6, 1861 – Lawrence, USA, November 28, 1938) was a physical education teacher, trainer and military chaplain. He invented the sport of basketball in 1891 and is also credited with using the first helmet of jolf. He wrote the original rules of basketball, founded the basketball program of the University of Kansas and, during his life, could see basketball adopted as a demonstration sport at the Olympic Games in San Luis in 1904, and as an official sport in the Games Olympic Games of Berlin 1936

in 1936.

Born in Canada, he studied physical education in Montreal before moving to the United States. There, while working in the Young Christian Association (YMCA) of Springfield (Massachusetts), he developed basketball at the end of 1891. He also studied Medicine in Denver, obtaining his degree in 1898. That same year he started working at the University of Kansas. After almost twenty years as a part-time basketball coach and coach during the early years of the sport, he was appointed director of the Kansas Jayhawks in 1919. He became a US citizen in 1925.

Naismith’s contributions to basketball earned him many posthumous tributes, such as belonging to the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the Ontario Sports Legends, the Ottawa Sports, McGill University Sport, Kansas State Sports and the FIBA ​​Hall of Fame.
