James Lipton (born September 19, 1926) is an American writer, composer, actor and television host. He is the dean emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School of Pace University in New York. He is also the executive producer, scriptwriter and presenter of the television program Inside the Actors Studio, which debuted in 1994. Thanks to his program, he has been nominated for 15 Emmy awards, and in 2007 he received an Emmy for his career.

He is also a pilot and member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Lipton obtained the degree of gentleman of the Order of Arts and Letters of France.

First years

Lipton was born in Detroit (Michigan), the son of Betty Weinberg, a teacher, and Lawrence Lipton, a journalist of Polish origin, whose father was the author of the book The Holy Barbarians, which was well received by the Beat generation. In 1944, James Lipton graduated from the Central High School in Detriot.


One of his first roles as an actor was the character Dan Reid, in the radio play of The Lone Ranger, Lipton worked as a screenwriter in several television series, such as Another World, The Edge of Night, Guiding Light, Return to Peyton Place and Capitol.In 1951 he acted in the play The Autumn Garden, by Lillian Hellman. Two years later he appeared in the independent film The Big Break, directed by Joseph Strick.

Lipton wrote the Broadway musical Sherry !, which was based on the play The Man Who Came to Dinner by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. The music was in charge of Laurence Rosenthal. In 1968 he published a book entitled An Exaltation of Larks. He was the executive producer of Jimmy Carter’s presidential inauguration gala, the first in history to be televised. In 1983 he published the novel Mirrors, which was later adapted into a television movie.

In 1994 the television program Inside the Actors Studio debuted, in which Lipton participates as a screenwriter, producer and presenter. In each episode of the program there is a different guest, be it an actor, director or screenwriter, who is interviewed by Lipton about his career. Lipton has interviewed more than 250 people in the program, Inside the Actors Studio has been nominated for 15 Emmy Awards.

Lipton acted in the series Arrested Development, where he played the director of a prison. In addition, he participated as a voice actor in the animated film Bolt, Disney. In 2007 he received an Emmy Award for his career.
