Kevin James LaBrie (May 5, 1963) is a Canadian tenor, singer of the progressive metal band Dream Theater.

James_Labrie’s Biography

He was born on May 5, 1963 in Penetanguishene, a city in Ontario, Canada. His parents say that when he was three years old he was always singing the song that he played on the radio at the time enjoying a cream suso. Motivated by his father, James began to sing and play drums at the age of five: “My parents say I was always drumming things, so if they did not buy me a drum kit, it would ruin the house!” At age six, it was obvious that his voice was mature for his age. When he was in school, his teacher put him in singing classes to extend his training. Meanwhile his family had a small barbershop choir, in which James participated later. In spite of everything, James liked the rock with which he grew up as a teenager. At 14 he sang and played drums in several neighborhood groups. He knew that drums were secondary, that his real passion was singing. At 18 he moved to Toronto.

When he was 21 years old he started vocal training with the renowned teacher Rosemary Patricia Burns. After working with numerous Canadian bands, James acquired the position of vocalist in Winter Rose, with which he was about to sign a contract with Atlantic Records. Later on, Pierre Paradis, who worked with James for a project with Aquarius Records, told him that there was a band in New York called Dream Theater that was looking for a vocalist. The rest, as they say, is history.

James’ musical tastes are very varied. Appointment to Metallica, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Journey, Judas Priest … as well as classical composers like Mozart, Vivaldi or Beethoven. His influences as a singer are Steve Perry (Journey), Freddie Mercury, Sting, Paul Rodgers, Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) and Nat King Cole. James has always encouraged vocalists to acquire formal music education.

During his musical career James has become one of the most respected and admired singers in progressive rock. As a voice of Dream Theater and other side projects he has helped define the sound of progressive music.

With Dream Theater he has released 12 albums during the more than twenty years they have been together, as well as numerous projects and collaborations with other musicians. In addition to Dream Theater, in 1999 he began a parallel project called MullMuzzler, with which he has released two albums titled “Keep It To Yourself” (1999) and “Mullmuzzler 2” (2001). He has also participated as a singer in the following albums: Explorer’s Club “Age Of Impact” (1998), Explorer’s Club “Raising The Mammoth” (2002), Leonardo “The Absolute Man” (2001), Ayreon “The Human Equation” (2004), Frameshift “Unweaving The Rainbow” (2003), Tim Donahue “Madmen And Sinners” (2004), in a solo album entitled “Elements Of Persuasion” (2005), and in another called “Static Impulse” (2010) ). When you are not on tour, enjoy camping, skiing and reading. His favorite authors include Anne Rice, Dee Brown, Robert Utley and Forest Carter. He currently lives in Toronto, Canada, with his wife Karen, his daughter Chloe and his son Chance Abraham.

James has said in many interviews that he is a Christian, and actively practices his religion. There is an interview (not available) from HM Magazine that talked with him in depth about his beliefs, and the lyrical meaning of the song Blind Faith, with the reporter and with John Petrucci.

LaBrie’s disease

LaBrie has received harsh criticism for years because of its dubious live vocal technique. Although he has rarely used it as an excuse, LaBrie has admitted on some occasions that he has dealt with a long vocal cord injury.

At the end of 1994 LaBrie had an unfortunate accident when eating bad food that caused him a lot of vomit, which in turn destroyed his vocal cords. The doctors told him that there was no remedy, he should let them heal by themselves. Dream Theater continued with the shows and LaBrie did not stay out, although she considered leaving the band definitively at times, something that her classmates did not agree with, but her concerts worsened noticeably and the recovery slowed down, reaching spend 8 years before your full recovery.

In one of the interviews conducted in Spain during the tour of Systemathic Chaos (in bold the interviewer):

Chafardeando by Internet, a few years ago, I found that the general opinion was that the poorest member at the musical level in the band was you. For some reason, people have on that kind of pedestal the whole band, except you. Have you ever felt “inferior” in that sense?

“I imagine that people refer to one thing. In 1994, in the end, I destroyed my vocal cords, and it took me eight years to recover from the damage I had in my voice. “

But you kept singing.

“Clear. That’s why it took me so long to heal, because it was something I could not accelerate, I had to let it heal itself. And I do not deny that there were many nights in which I sang very badly. There were nights when my voice was very affected. But now my voice is healed, my voice has returned to normal and I’m singing better than ever. Some fans tell me ‘hey uncle, you sing like in’ Images And Words ‘and he said’ well, of course, it’s because my voice is already healed “.

You never made it public.

“Of course not. Because I do not want people to feel sorry for me. People do not care that I have a problem with the vocal cords. I told myself I would not say anything and that I would keep going until I got over it. The doctors told me that I had to let him be cured alone, so doing all the tours I did, the process took a lot longer. Finally, I started to recover 3 or 4 years ago and things have returned to normal. Last night we played live in Granada and it was great “.

Do not you think that not having said things publicly can make some think that now you sing better with the help of technology?

“No, it’s just that I’ve healed. The monitors in the ear are a help, because I hear very well when I’m on stage but the fucking technology is not going to make my voice better than it can be. I do not use any of that. Now I feel great. “
