James Scott Bumgarner , better known by his stage name James Garner (Norman, Oklahoma, April 7, 1928 – Los Angeles, California, July 19, 2014 ), Was an American actor. He was one of the few stars of his country who triumphed simultaneously in film and television for three decades.

James Garner’s Biography

At age 16 he enlisted in the Merchant Navy and then worked in the National Guard before his retirement. He received the Purple Heart of the United States Senate for services rendered in the Korean War.

After being a model for Jantzen swimsuits, in 1954 she obtained a supporting role in the Broadway production of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. At that time he also made commercial announcements and some papers on television.

His first appearance on the big screen was in 1956, in the films The Girl He Left Behind and Toward the Unknown. He was a fortunate debutante, because the following year he worked with the legendary Marlon Brando in Sayonara, being awarded with a Golden Globe as a revelation actor.

After four small roles in films, he achieved fame thanks to television in the 50s, when he played a professional poker player as the protagonist of the hit western series Maverick (1957-1960). Other prominent actors occupied leading roles, but Garner was the big star of the show. And unlike other figures, whose television work prevented them from succeeding in film, Garner alternated both media successfully for decades.

In the 60s, he participated in many films such as: The Children’s Hour, by William Wyler, along with Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine; The Thrill of It All; Move Over, Darling (Apártate, darling), with Doris Day, which was a remake of Marilyn Monroe’s unfinished film Something’s Got to Give; Boys’ Night Out, with Kim Novak and Tony Randall; the popular The Great Escape, with Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough; The Americanization of Emily, with Julie Andrews; Grand Prix of John Frankenheimer, together with Eva Marie Saint and Yves Montand; and Support Your Local Sheriff!.

In the 70s, Roy Huggins had the idea of ​​remaking Maverick, but in a modern form of private detective. Huggins teamed up with co-creator Stephen J. Cannell and thus The Rockford Files emerged, reviving Maverick’s success in the modern era and with another identity. Garner began in 1974 to play the role of the protagonist, Jim Rockford, and for six seasons was his best role, for which he won the Emmy Award for Best Actor in 1977.

In the 1980s and 1990s, James Garner was able to choose prestigious film projects. In 1982 he shot with Julie Andrews the hit comedy Victor Victoria, directed by the veteran Blake Edwards, and in 1986 he received a nomination for the Oscar Award for the film Murphy’s Romance. In 1988 he participated in another Edwards movie, Sunset, along with Bruce Willis and Malcolm McDowell. In 1994, he co-starred with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster of the movie Maverick, based on the original version of the series, and in 1998 he rubbed elbows with Paul Newman, Gene Hackman and Susan Sarandon in Twilight (When the sun went down), praised film by Robert Benton. In 2000 he returned to the present with Space Cowboys, along with Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones.

On the death of John Ritter, Garner joined the cast of 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, like Grandpa Egan. At first he was a guest actor, but later he had to occupy more leading roles until the end of the series.

The actor died at his home in Los Angeles on July 19, 2014 at 86 years of age, due to cardiac arrest.
