Coburn was born in Laurel, Nebraska, son of Mylet S. (born Johnson) and James Harrison Coburn, Sr., a car mechanic. His maternal grandparents were immigrants from Sweden. He grew up in Compton, California, performing in school plays, and making his debut on the boards at La Jolla Playhouse.

First years

Having studied acting in New York with Stella Adler, his debut came in 1959 from the hand of Randolph Scott, in the Western Ride Lonesome. That same year also appeared in another minor western, Face of a Fugitive, and in some chapters of the television series Bonanza, before playing the role of Britt in the mega-success of John Sturges The Magnificent Seven (1960). Sturges again trusted Coburn for his next blockbuster, The Great Escape (1963). Coburn also participated in Stanley Donen’s intrigued film Charada (1963), with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.


In the 1960s he began to work with the “enfant terrible” of Hollywood, Sam Peckinpah, and his role in the film Major Dundee made him better known in the film industry. In the middle of that decade, it interpreted to the American secret agent Derek Flint in two parodic films of the series of films of James Bond, Our Man Flint (1966) and In Like Flint (1967). He also participated in the comedy What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966) by Blake Edwards. At the end of the decade, he made a great friendship, trained and planned to make a film with martial arts legend Bruce Lee, but Lee’s sudden death truncated the project.

In the decade of the 1970s, he collaborated with the well-known Italian director Sergio Leone in the film ¡Ááchate, maldito! (1971), in which he plays an Irish expert in explosives, who travels to Mexico during the time of the Mexican Revolution.

In 1972 he received an offer to work in Spain with the Italian director Tonino Valerii, in the film Una razón para vivir and una para morir, a war film set in the western United States and with touches of spaghetti western. He also worked again with Sam Peckinpah in two films, Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid (1973) and The Iron Cross (1977), a made-to-measure film that houses one of his best performances.

Coburn appeared in 1973 on the cover of the Band on the Run album by the Wings group.

At the end of that decade, he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which affected his health and his work for many years, until through self-medication based on organic sulfur compounds he achieved a definitive improvement.

In the early 1980s, the creator of the legendary series The A Team (Team A), Stephen J. Cannell, contacted him to play the role of John «Anibal» Smith, the protagonist. James declined the offer, and the paper was made by George Peppard, who was next on Cannell’s list.

In the 1990s, once recovered and fully recovered from his illness, he would appear again in films like Maverick, along with Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, and in television productions.

Probably, James Coburn was the first surprised in 1998 when he was a candidate, and won, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for playing the alcoholic father of Nick Nolte in Affliction (1997).


At 70 years of age, James Coburn received a new boost in his career, appearing in 14 titles. However, in November 2002 he died of a heart attack at the age of 74 years. His remains are in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.

In his 45-year career, Coburn stood out for developing roles of enigmatic and turbulent characters.
