James Francis Cagney, Jr. (New York, July 17, 1899-Stanford, March 30, 1986) was an American film actor. Winner of important prizes and actor in different roles, he is remembered for his tough-guy roles.

He stood out in the 1930s at the Warner Bros film company and maintained its relevance during the 1940s and 1950s. He won the 1943 Oscar for Best Leading Actor for the film Yanqui Dandy (1942).

James_Cagney’s Biography

His first major film was The Public Enemy, by William A. Wellman. He returned to play the role of gangster in two films directed by Raoul Walsh: The violent twenties and, above all, Red hot, where he said his most famous phrase, “On top of the world, mom.”

But Cagney was a very versatile actor who intervened in all kinds of films, from comedies to dramas, through westerns and even adaptations of Shakespeare plays. Highlights in his filmography Parade of limelight, The handsome, Has entered a photographer and Angels with dirty faces, in the thirties.

In the forties he continued to be one of the favorite actors of the public and continued to participate in great films. One of boxing, titled City of conquest, and the idealized biography of Yanqui Dandy, interpretation with which he won the Oscar for best actor. This success made him break with the Warner and found his own production company, with which he did not obtain any success, so he had to return to the producer of the Warner brothers.

In the fifties he went back to work on some great films like the Lion of the streets, Love Me or Let Me, Escala in Hawaii or The Man with the Thousand Faces. Finally, he ended his career temporarily in 1961, when he starred in the comedy One, two, three, directed by Billy Wilder.

In 1981 he returned to acting in Ragtime, where he again showed his great acting talent. It was his last movie.

Cagney died on March 30, 1986. He was 86 years old. He was survived by his wife Frances Vernon, with whom he had married in 1922.
