Jacob Hemphill (born May 15, 1980) is an American musician best known for being the lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist of the reggae band Soldiers of Jah Army (also called SOYA).

Jacob Hemphill was born on May 15, 1980 in Washington D.C. in United States. He is the son of Deidre West, a former worker of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). When he was 6 years old, he moved with his family to Monrovia, Liberia, in Africa, and returned to the United States a short time later. On his return to the United States, he met Bobby Lee (member of the reggae band SOJA), when he was in his first year of school; Together they met the other members of the band during high school, and finally Jacob graduated from George Mason University, in Washington D.C., United States.

Jacob comes from a family with musical influence, since his grandmother and great-grandmother maternal were people who influenced in the world of music and his father had a recording studio where he usually played Paul Simon, thus transmitting musical knowledge that took him to lean towards more tropical genres, such as reggae.

His influence for the reggae genre began in his stay in Africa and also because in his teenage age he participated, along with Bobby Lee, in various contests of the Nyabinghi community.
