He was born at a time when the name change was common, so he changed his birth name, Joseph Paul Zukauskas, to the surname of an Irish boxer who was very popular at the time but already retired, “Sailor Tom” Sharkey ( 1873-1953).
In 1929, in a bout at Yankee Stadium, Sharkey defeated former light heavyweight champion Tommy Loughran by knockout in the third round, earning the United States heavyweight title. This victory gave him the opportunity to fight for the world title that was vacant against the German boxer Max Schmeling. On June 12, 1930, the fight was made in which Sharkey was disqualified in the fourth round, after hitting Schmeling below the waist (low blow). This was the only occasion in the history of boxing that in a world championship a boxer was disqualified.
On October 12, 1931, Sharkey defeated Italian Primo Carnera, and then gave him another chance to fight for the title for the second time against Schmeling. On June 21, 1932, at Madison Square Garden in New York, Sharkey defeated Schmeling in the rematch by proclaiming himself the new world champion in a highly controversial unanimous decision.
In his first defense, Sharkey lost his championship, on June 29, 1933 in the rematch against the Italian Primo Carnera. After this fight he lost two more against King Levinsky and Tommy Loughran (four years before he had won him) and was for two years without fighting until he returned in 1935. After four more matches in which he won two, lost one and tied another , he faced Joe Louis, who defeated him easily by knockout in three rounds.
In 1994, Jack Sharkey was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He died on August 17, 1994 due to a respiratory arrest.
