Jack Leon Ruby , born Jacob Leon Rubenstein (Chicago, Illinois, United States, March 25, 1911 – Dallas, Texas, January 3, 1967) , was a nighttime Dallas businessman and a secondary figure in the American underworld known for assassinating Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963 in the city of Dallas, the only suspect in police custody for the murder, two days before being tried, of the President of the United States John F. Kennedy.

Jack Ruby’s Biography

Jacob Rubenstein (Jack Ruby), the fifth of eight children, was born in Chicago on March 25, 1911. His parents were Polish Jews but they emigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. His father, Joseph Rubenstein, a carpenter, was a violent man who had many arrests for assaults and beatings. Jack had a troublesome childhood and at the age of eleven he was admitted to a psychiatric clinic (Institute of Juvenile Research). Subsequently, the Chicago Juvenile Court decided that Jack was not receiving appropriate parental care and sent him to an alternative home. Her mother was diagnosed with a severe depressive neurosis, being admitted to the Elgin State Hospital.

Links with organized crime

In the city of Chicago his friend Leon Cooke, enlists him to work in the union of scrap collectors, but on December 8, 1939, Cooke is killed by John Martin, president of the union. Ruby is investigated by the police in connection with this crime, but is acquitted for lack of evidence. As a result of this Jack Ruby leaves this job and finds another as a salesperson.

He moved to Dallas where he entered the world of cabarets and places for nightlife, a situation in which he came in contact with members of organized crime, in particular the Campisi brothers, related to Carlos Marcello, a well-known mafia boss.

World War II

In May of 1943 Jack Ruby was called up. He served in several bases of the Air Corps of the United States Army, a forerunner of the current air force of that country. His behavior continued to be violent and on several occasions he fought for Judeophobic comments. His official specialty was aviation mechanics although he never did a course in it. Jack Ruby reached the rank of First Class Soldier and achieved an honorable discharge on February 21, 1946. Jack Ruby returns to Chicago to find work as a seller of oak baskets manufactured by his brother, Earl Ruby.

Anti-American Activities Committee

Memorandum from the Department of Justice of the United States in which it is recommended to reject Jack Ruby as a witness because he is an employee of Congressman Richard Nixon.

He was a star witness of Richard Nixon in 1947 against the Committee of Anti-American Activities The FBI recommended withdrawing the depositions of this one called Jacob Rubenstein still for being a member of the staff of the congressman Richard Nixon. , Nixon intervenes to prevent the FBI from investigating Ruby and also prevents him from being summoned to testify in a United States Congress Committee investigating the Mafia, according to an FBI memo discovered in the 1970s.

Moving to Dallas

In 1947 Ruby returns to Dallas where she manages the Singapore Night Club for her sister, Eva Grant. In 1947, he is arrested by the Bureau of Narcotics. Steve Guthrie, Dallas Sheriff, claimed that Ruby was sent by the Chicago Mafia to handle his illegal city bets, however he was released without charge. Ruby has a long history of arrests with subsequent release without charge. In 1950, the Kefauver Committee of the United States Senate said that Ruby was “a lieutenant of the Crime Syndicate sent to Dallas as a liaison to Chicago gangsters,” according to later statements by a member of the latter. with the money laundering of a friend he bought the Silver Spur Club. He also bought the Bob Wills Ranch House, a Texas-style nightclub. These clubs were not successful, so he tried to stay in business now as a partial owner of the Vegas Club. A subsequent attempt to establish another nightclub, the Sovereign Club, also ended in failure.

In another commercial attempt, Ruby opened the Carousel Club. He worked as a master of ceremonies, with a small orchestra and four strippers.

In August 1959 Jack Ruby was invited to visit Cuba by American nightclub owner Lewis McWillie, an associate of Santo Trafficante mafia boss. At the same time, McWillie supervised the bets at the Tropicana Hotel in Havana. Later, McWillie was involved in the campaign to overthrow Fidel Castro after he overthrew Fulgencio Batista.

Labor issues

The Ruby workers were members of the United States Variety Actors Union (AGVA). Ruby has a record of not paying her workers and unfair dismissals quite bulky. This behavior resulted in a dispute with the AGVA. In 1963 Jack Ruby visited New Orleans where he obtained the services of a stripper named Jada. After three months she was also fired, which caused her more work problems. It is claimed that as a result of his problems with AGVA Ruby strengthened his contacts with Mafia leaders, Carlos Marcello and Santos Trafficante, during the summer of 1963.

Murder of John F. Kennedy

On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy arrives in Dallas and was murdered that same day while traveling in an open car.

Almost immediately the search for Lee Harvey Oswald begins, the main suspect being indicated and arrested. Oswald worked in the Texas Book Depository from where according to the investigation of the moment, the shots were shot that killed the president.

They discovered a palmar fingerprint of Oswald in a Mannlicher-Carcano rifle that was found in an office in the Texas Book Depository, a place that was presumed to have been the source of the shooting. Oswald’s fingerprints were also found in cardboard boxes and in handbags on the floor where he worked.

Oswald denies his participation

While being questioned by the Dallas Police, Oswald denied at any time having participated in the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He stated in public that he was a patsy (a term used to describe someone who is being blamed for a crime he did not commit), a scapegoat.

Murder of Oswald

Jack Ruby the moment he shoots Oswald

On November 24, 1963, the Dallas police decided to transfer Lee Harvey Oswald to the county jail. While Oswald is transported through the underground parking lots of the police barracks, Jack Ruby violently makes his way through the crowd of journalists, photographers and cameramen present on the site and shoots Colt Cobra to Oswald in the stomach, wounding him to death. He is arrested immediately and told numerous witnesses that “the Jews have guts” and that he had “redeemed” the city of Dallas before the eyes of the people and that he had also avoided the president’s widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, the pain of having to testify before a court in front of her husband’s killer.

In subsequent statements, he claimed that he had shot Oswald because of an obfuscation of the moment and that he had not planned the murder.

On March 14, 1964, a Dallas court found Jack Ruby guilty of Oswald’s murder, sentenced to death. This trial was annulled following the appeal of his lawyers who got him tried again, this time for simple homicide instead of premeditated murder.

Opinion of the Warren Commission

In October 1964, the Warren Commission reports that, “it finds no evidence that Lee Harvey Oswald or Jack Ruby were part of any conspiracy, national or international, to assassinate President Kennedy.”

Select Committee of the House on Murders

The House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded that Ruby’s multiple trips to Cuba were due to “… that Ruby was a mail from the betting mafia in Cuba.”

Conspiracy theories

Ruby has also been under suspicion of those who think that both the Kennedy and Oswald assassinations are part of a conspiracy. In this context, the assassination of Oswald would have aimed at silencing the suspect to avoid statements that could compromise the assumptions involved in the crime. As regards Ruby, suspicions emanate from his ties with Richard Nixon as star witness of this in the framework of the committee of anti-American activities, with the mafia and with characters involved in anti-Castro conspiracies.

No theory of conspiracy has been proven to date.

Jack Ruby died of lung embolism from lung cancer on January 3, 1967, at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, while awaiting a new trial related to the drug, only three years after the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald.
