Jack Haley’s Biography
His real name was John Joseph Haley, Jr. , and he was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Healey acted in vaudeville as a singer and dancer humorist, and one of his best friends was a vaudeville partner Fred Allen.
In the early 1930s Haley starred in shorts for the Vitaphone company in Brooklyn, New York. His physical appearance made it easier for him to act in supporting roles in musical feature films such as Poor Little Rich Girl with Shirley Temple, Higher and Higher with Frank Sinatra and the Irving Berlin musical Alexander’s Ragtime Band. Both Poor Little Rich Girl and Alexander’s Ragtime Band were premiered by Twentieth Century-Fox.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hired Haley to work on The Wizard of Oz when Buddy Ebsen, who was originally going to take on the role of the Tin Man, had an almost fatal reaction to inhaling the aluminum dust makeup. The makeup was modified in order to avoid risks with Haley. Even so, he suffered an eye infection that caused him to miss four days of shooting, and the Wizard of Oz was the only Haley film for MGM.
Healey returned to musical comedies in the 1940s. In these years most of his work went to RKO Radio Pictures. He left the interpretation in 1947 when he refused to perform in a version of the RKO of Seven Keys to Baldpate, role played by Phillip Terry.
He married Florence McFadden on February 25, 1921. They had a son, Jack Healey Jr. (later a successful film producer), and a daughter, Gloria Haley Jr. was married to Liza Minnelli, daughter of her father’s partner in The Wizard of Oz Judy Garland.
Jack Healey remained married until his death from an acute myocardial infarction in 1979 in Los Angeles, California, at 80 years of age. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
In 1978 Gloria, Haley’s daughter, published her father’s memoirs under the title Heart of the Tin Man.
