J Edgar Hoover Short Bio

John Edgar Hoover , KBE, (Washington DC, January 1, 1895-ibid., May 2, 1972) was the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States. , better known as FBI. Appointed Director of the Bureau of Investigation, predecessor of the FBI, in 1924, Edgar Hoover played a decisive role in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained as its director for thirty-seven years until his death in 1972 at the age of 77. . Hoover is credited with modernizing the FBI with the use of new technologies for police work, having created fingerprint files and forensic laboratories.

In his last years at the head of the FBI and after his death he became a controversial figure after he began to come to light evidences of some of his secret activities. His critics accuse him of going too far in his functions, using the FBI to persecute and harass dissidents and political activists during Macarthism, protests against the Vietnam War or civil rights movements, as well as accumulating secret files about the lives of numerous political leaders and obtain evidence through illegal procedures. As a result, Hoover accumulated great power, enough to intimidate and threaten the eight presidents with whom he lived during his life as a director. Several presidents tried to dismiss him, without success. However, his biographer Kenneth Ackerman, maintains that the secret files of Hoover of the different presidents are a myth.

The very president of the United States, Harry Truman, accused Hoover of transforming the FBI into a private secret police. Truman stated that “we do not want a secret police or Gestapo. The FBI is moving in that direction. He is intervening in sexual scandals and using blackmail (…) J. Edgar Hoover would give his right eye to hold on to the position, and all the representatives and senators are afraid of him. “After his death, the maximum time allowed was limited. A person can serve as Director of the FBI.
