Ivo Pitanguy was born on July 5, 1926 in the city of Belo Horizonte, son of surgeon Antonio de Campos Pitanguy, and his wife Maria Stael Jardim de Campos Pitanguy. He studied medicine at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Through a scholarship, Pitanguy was able to attend a course between 1948 and 1949 at the North Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati Ohio, United States. During this time he too, he also visited the plastic surgery service of Dr. John Marquis Converse in New York. In 1950 Pitanguy traveled to France, where he was an internal student of the hospitals of Paris, under the supervision of the French surgeon Marc Iselin. In 1952 he returned to Brazil and entered the reconstructive surgery service of the Souza Aguiar hospital in Rio de Janeiro. In 1955 he married Marilu Nascimento, with whom he had 4 children. In 1960, he joined the plastic surgery department of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. A year later, on December 17, 1961, a burning circus tent fell on top of about 2,500 spectators in the Brazilian city of Niterói, and Pitanguy took charge of the burn victims after the tragedy, performing several grafts and reconstructive surgeries. In 1963, he founded the “Ivo Pitanguy Clinic”. He also founded a plastic surgery school with several surgeons from various parts of the world.
On August 5, 2016, Pitanguy carried in a wheelchair the Olympic flame of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016. He died the following day at the age of 90, after suffering a cardiac arrest while he was in his home.
