Ryan’s full name was, Jessie Irene Noblett and was born in San Francisco, California, on October 17, 1902, the daughter of James Merritt Noblett and Catherine “Katie” McSharry. His father was from North Carolina and his mother was a native of Ireland.
He had a sister named Anna. Ryan and her parents moved to San Francisco when she was a child. She began her career at age 11 after earning money to sing “Pretty Baby” in an amateur contest at the Valencia Theater in San Francisco.
At the age of 20, he married writer and comedian Tim Ryan. They performed in vaudeville as an act of marriage, known in the art world as a “Dumb Dora” and personified by George Burns and Gracie Allen.
Afterwards, the couple divorced in 1942. Ryan toured with Bob Hope, making regular appearances on his radio show, he also played the role of Edgar Kennedy’s wife in two short films in 1943. That same year, she appeared in the movie O, My Darling Clementine, starring Roy Acuff. In 1944, Irene played the role of Polly Kane in Hot Rhythm. In 1946 he married Harold E. Knox, who worked in film production. She continued working on films from the 1940s and early 1950s.
In 1955, Ryan made his first appearance on television on the CBS series The Danny Thomas Show. She appeared with Walter Brennan in an episode of the ABC comedy The Real McCoys. In 1960-1961 she appeared in Bringing Up Buddy, starring Frank Aletter and played Cynthia Boyle.
After divorcing with Knox, it appeared in the most important series of its race, The Beverly Hillbillies, where it interpreted to Daisy “Granny” Moses, the mother-in-law of J.D. Clampett (Buddy Ebsen). The creator of this series was Paul Henning.
Irene Ryan died on April 26, 1973 in Santa Monica, California, at age 70. Her body was buried in a crypt at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Santa Monica, along with her sister, Anna Thompson. p>
