Hayes or Chief Fall Cloud was a Pima Indian born in the Gila River reservation in Sacaton, Arizona. In 1942 he left the school to join the United States Marine Corps, where he was trained and later sent to the island of Iwo Jima, where he participated in the invasion of the place. Four days after their arrival, Hayes, along with 4 Marines and a Navy sanitary, climbed to the top of Mount Suribachi to replace a United States flag on the summit. The moment was captured by Joe Rosenthal, Associated Press war photographer.
After the publication of the photograph, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered that survivors of the battle who had appeared in the photograph return to the country in order to sponsor a war bond collection.
After the war he had a life marked by the abuse of alcohol. Although he had an ephemeral fame and even appeared in the John Wayne Arenas movie of Iwo Jima, he lived with the guilt of having survived the war. He was arrested fifteen times until his death, at 32 years of age. In his honor, a biographical film about his life was filmed and the singer Peter La Farge wrote a song in his honor, The Ballad of Ira Hayes (“the ballad of Ira Hayes”), which was covered by numerous other singers, including Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.
