Imran Khan Short Bio

Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi (Urdu: عمران خان نیازی) (born October 5, 1952) is a retired Pakistani cricketer who played as an international of the sport for two decades in the century. XX. He became a politician in the mid-1990s and currently, in addition to running his own political party, is also a social worker and cricket commentator.

Khan was born from an Pashtun family in Lahore and studied at Aitchison, Worcester and later at Keble College in Oxford. Khan started playing cricket at 13 years old. Initially playing for his university and later for the Worcestershire Cricket club, he made his debut with Pakistan at age 18 during the English series of 1971 in Birmingham. After graduating from Oxford, he joined the national cricket team of Pakistan in 1976 with which he played until 1992. Khan also served as the captain of the team intermittently in the period 1982-1992. He notably led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, the first and only victory for Pakistan in that competition.

In April 1996, he founded the Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI), a centrist political party, and became the party’s national leader. Khan contested a seat in the National Assembly in October 2002 and was a member of Mianwali’s opposition until 2007. He was again elected to parliament in the 2013 elections, when his party emerged as the second largest in the country by popular vote. Khan is the parliamentary leader of the PTI and, therefore, of the third largest block of parliamentarians in the National Assembly since 2013. Khan remains a prominent philanthropist and commentator, and was chancellor of the University of Bradford between 2005 and 2014. He received Una honorary scholarship from the Royal College of Physicians in 2012.
