Idi Amin Dada (Koboko or Kampala, c.1925 – Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, August 16, 2003) was a Ugandan military officer and political leader who served as Ugandan president since 1971. 1979.
Amin joined the British colonial regiment, the King’s African Fusiliers, in 1946. He rose to the rank of lieutenant and took part in the British actions against the Somali rebels in Shifta’s war and then in the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya. After Uganda’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, Amin continued in the armed forces and rose to senior status before being named Army Commander in 1965. Reported that President Milton Obote planned to arrest him for misappropriating army funds, Amin took the power in a coup in January 1971 and appointed himself president.
During his years in power, Amin went from loyalty to the West and received firm support from Israel to be supported later by Libya of Muammar Gaddafi, the Soviet Union and East Germany. 1976 Amin served as president of the Organization for African Unity, a pan-Africanist group designed to promote solidarity among African states, and from 1977 to 1979, Uganda was targeted by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. In 1977, after the withdrawal of Uganda from the last two British diplomats, Amin declared that he had defeated the British and added the acronym “CBE” to his title, “Conqueror of the British Empire,” in his initials in English. Radio Uganda then announced that its full title was: “His Excellency the president for life, Field Marshal Alhaji Dr. Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE”.
Ugandan internal dissent and Amin’s attempt to annex the Kagera region of Tanzania in 1978 led to the Uganda-Tanzania War and the subsequent fall of his regime. Amin fled into exile, first in Libya and since 1980 in Saudi Arabia, where he lived until his death on August 16, 2003. Amin’s government was characterized by the flagrant abuse of human rights, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption and economic mismanagement. The number of victims of their regime ranges between 100,000 and 500,000, according to estimates of international observers and human rights groups.
