Wilson is an aboriginal of Timaru. He went to school in Christchurch. He taught as a volunteer of the “Service Abroad” in Sarawak, Borneo. After attending the University of Canterbury, he studied the botany of Stewart Island, and then in the Mount Cook region, for several years. This was followed by a botanical study of the Banks Peninsula.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) had a program, known as the Program of Natural Protected Areas (PNAP), to identify and protect the life examples of plants, animals, ecosystems and the characteristics of the landscape that make them of New Zealand only. The PNAP was established in 1983, and the country was divided into 268 ecological districts, grouped into 85 ecological regions. The Banks Peninsula was one of those regions, with Port Hills, Herbert and Akaroa meeting in three districts.
Wilson started field work on the Banks Peninsula and Kaitorete Spit in September 1983. He established a 900 m point network system, and a survey with plots of 6 m x 6 m in each site. Thus, 1331 plots were surveyed in a period of five years. While the work was supported by the Botanical Trust of Koiata & nbsp ;; DOC confirmed that it was directly relevant to them and asked Wilson to write the Peninsula Peninsula PNAP report. The report was the 21st in the series, and was published in 1992.
Wilson appears in the film Tierra Whisperers / Papatuanuku.
