Hugh Marston Hefner (Chicago, Illinois, April 9, 1926-Los Angeles, California, September 27, 2017), known as Hugh Hefner and colloquially nicknamed Hef , was a publisher of magazines for adults, businessman and American playboy, famous for being the founder and editor-in-chief of Playboy magazine. He became a charismatic icon and defender of the sexual revolution and personal freedom.

Hugh Hefner’s Biography

First steps

He was born in Chicago on April 9, 1926. He attended Sayro Elementary School and Steinmentz High School in Chicago. He served in the US military during the last months of World War II. Subsequently, he studied Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

When Playboy appeared in the kiosks in 1953, a new vision emerged on how to deal with sexuality in American life. Hugh Hefner was the true forerunner of graphic eroticism in the early fifties. When the nudes were relegated to marginal and semi-clandestine magazines, he claimed human sexuality. With a playful tone, but in a context where they fit the freedom of expression, serious journalism and literature.

He was only 27 years old when he worked as a circulation director for a magazine called Children’s Activities. Having been educated in a strict, conservative and very religious family, he dreamed of creating a magazine that he would call Stag Party (a phrase used in English to talk about a single men’s party). With a lot of effort and money made among friends, he managed to get the first issue of his magazine, which in the process was transformed into Playboy and had as corporate image a rabbit, drawn by Arv Miller. Playboy enjoyed an immediate triumph, mainly because Hefner had bought a photograph of the naked actress Marilyn Monroe; it had been taken before its success in Hollywood, and Hefner bought it from its author and used it as the drop-down of its first edition. Monroe was already a star at the time the magazine was published. The edition included an editorial written by Hefner where he explained the philosophy of Playboy.

He became famous when in the 60s he ran his empire from the wide bed of the Playboy Mansion located in Chicago. The tycoon owned a chain of nightclubs, served by girls disguised as bunnies and spread to other businesses, such as casinos and hotels. In that same year he made “Playboy’s Penthouse”, a weekly series for TV where he appeared with a lot of “friends” of the magazine, such as the comedian Lenny Bruce and singers like Ella Fitzgerald, conducting interviews with public figures. It was his demonstration against Puritanism and in favor of the pleasures of life.

Hefner was a precursor, an advocate of individual liberties, an activist of racial equality. Already in the decade of 1960, in one of its clubs of the south of the United States, acted a black humorist in front of a white public, to which they followed others to him. He also did interviews and showed his support to African-American rights activists such as Martin Luther King or human rights activists and pacifists opposed to the Vietnam War.

The Playboy empire: crisis and rebound

In the 70s, the Playboy empire began to break down, when it came out harsher competition, magazines such as High Society or Hustler (founded by Larry Flynt). The clubs began to close, until Hefner gave the reins to his daughter, Christie, who successfully re-established the company. This being the case, Playboy extended its commercial line to the world of cinema, video and cybernetics, becoming a solid and modern corporation.
