Hugh Glass Short Bio
Hugh Glass (Scranton (Pennsylvania), 1780 – Williston (North Dakota), 1833) was a prominent trapper and frontierman (“frontiersman”) American, known for his exploits in the West of the United States in the first third of the 19th century.
Little is known about the early stages of Glass’s life. He was probably born in Pennsylvania and some stories about him claim that he was a sailor, a reluctant pirate with Jean Lafitte and also an honorary pawnee. The best documented are his campaigns as an explorer in the upper Missouri River basin, in the region of the current states of South Dakota and Montana.
Glass is famous, above all, for having made a legendary journey through the countryside after being attacked and wounded by a grizzly bear. A 1971 film, entitled Man in the Wilderness, starring Richard Harris and John Huston, is inspired by this story. In 2015, the movie The Reborn, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is also based on this same story.
