Horst Buchholz’s Biography

Buchholz was born in Neukölln, (Berlin) and was the son of a shoemaker. During the Second World War he was evacuated to Silesia and at the end of the war he lived in a foster home in Czechoslovakia. to return to Berlin as soon as he could. As soon as he finished his education, he sought work in the theater, debuting in 1949. He soon left his native home to work in West Berlin, where he began to work at the Schiller Theater, on the radio or in small dubbing works after 1952. He obtained a medium-sized role important in “Marianne de Ma Jeunesse” (1954) directed by Julien Duvivier. Reach recognition by winning the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival in the film “Himmel ohne Sterne”. His physique allowed him to work in films such as “Die Halbstarken” (1956) or “Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers” (1957) in which he was starring and directed by Kurt Hoffmann that had been based on the novel by Thomas Mann. As a result of this he began to appear in foreign films since 1959 as the British production “Tiger Bay”. So he worked on the famous The Magnificent Seven (1960) or One, Two, Three (1961) by Billy Wilder. A versatile actor, he worked in comedies, horror films, war films and other genres throughout the 1960s: the quality of the films in which he participated decreased from the mid-1970s, with works for television as Requiem for Granada, in 1990. He died of pneumonia that developed after a surgical intervention for a femoral fracture in Berlin at the age of sixty-nine years being buried there, in the Waldfriedhof Dahlem.
