Horace Mann (1844-1868) was a botanist, mycologist and American pteridologist.
Horace Mann’s Biography
He was the eldest son of the well-known educator Horace Mann Sr. He received a good part of his education from his father, which fostered an interest in nature. He enrolled at the Lawrence Scientific School, where he took courses in zoology with Agassiz and in botany with Gray. Advised by him, he accompanied William T. Brigham to Hawaii, in 1864. Upon his return, Mann specialized in Hawaiian flora; and prepared a “Enumeratio of Hawaiian Plants” for his thesis, which he obtained in 1867. Gray, apparently hoped to develop it as a successor in the botanical work of Harvard University, and put Mann in charge of the garden botanist and the “Department of botany” when he went to Europe in September 1868. But, Mann, who had never been healthy, died of tuberculosis on November 11, 1868.
