Hikaru Utada (宇多田 ヒ カ ル, Utada Hikaru ?, New York, United States, January 19, 1983) is a Japanese pop singer. Utada is one of the most recognized Japanese singers so far, as well as one of the most important for the history of Japan. Together (singles and albums, both physical and digital), it has sold more than 50,000,000 copies worldwide. It is claimed that, with millions of sales, Hikaru Utada is the singer who has sold the most songs for mobile phones. It also has the best selling digital single in the world (Flavor of Life), with more than 15 million legal downloads so far, leaving behind, for example, Umbrella by Rihanna or Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne. The digital sales of their songs, separately, from their fifth Japanese album Heart Station add up to 20 million copies.

Currently it has become known in the West for its foray into the US and British market (reaching number one in the most prestigious dance lists of both countries) and also for having sung the main themes of video games Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II by Square-Enix and Squaresoft, both in English and Japanese.

In 2010 he announced a recess, which continues today, and which has only been interrupted by the release of «桜 流 し» (Sakura Nagashi), closing theme of Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, the third of the cinematographic tetralogy Rebuild of Evangelion and for which Utada has become a symbol when collaborating in each installment with “Beautiful World”, Fly Me To The Moon and “Beautiful World -PLANiTb Acoustica Mix-“. Singer returned with her sixth album in Japanese, Fantôme. In 2017, Utada changed the label, now the singer is with Sony Music.

Hikaru Utada’s Biography

Born in Manhattan on January 19, 1983, she is the daughter of Utada Junko, a well-known singer of traditional Japanese music, better known by her stage name Keiko Fuji. His father is the music producer Utada Teruzane (Teruzane Sking). He lived his childhood between New York and Tokyo, always influenced by the world of music thanks to his father and his mother. During his childhood, groups like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, The Police and Dr. Dre were the ones that would leave a mark on her and mark the musical style of Utada. At age 13, Toshiba-EMI contacted her to write pop songs in Japanese, which she would later release on her first and most successful album, First Love, at the age of 16 in 1999. This album, First Love, was one of the records that has sold more sales in the history of Japanese music, with more than 10 million copies (more than 7 million in Japan). This album was followed by Distance and Deep River, and among them many singles, all in Japanese. In 2003 there was a time of low for medical reasons (a non-malignant ovarian tumor). After releasing her latest single in Japanese (Dareka no negai kanau koro, translated, “When your wishes come true”), Utada needed a drastic change in her career. He left behind the songs in Japanese to embark on the Exodus project, a disc entirely in English that he would later release in the USA. UU Meanwhile, Utada participated in the Nintendo DS promotion campaign with the song Easy Breezy under the slogan of Touch! of the console. Then, on his return to Japan, Utada released several singles and other albums (Ultra Blue and Heart Station).
