Héctor Olivera (Olivos, Buenos Aires, April 5, 1931) is a producer, screenwriter and director of Argentine cinema. He is one of the most recognized filmmakers of his generation in particular and the cinema of his country in general.

Hector Olivera’s Biography

He studied first at the military Lyceum, until at age fourteen he was taken by his mother to Estudios Baires. At the age of sixteen he began his career as a second assistant director in La gran tentación, a film in which Carlos Cores and Elisa Christian Galvé worked, among others.

In 1950 he started working with Eduardo Bedoya in Argentine Artists Associates in the production part. Along with directors like Mario Soffici, Tulio Demicheli, Carlos Rinaldi and Luis César Amadori, he learned about cinema, which allowed him to become an independent executive producer. With Fernando Ayala, he created the production company Aries Cinematográfica Argentina. Olivera took care of the production and Ayala of the management. They start working in 1958 with the filming of El Jefe, being Olivera co-producer.

After several films in which he held production positions and which were directed by Ayala, among them the famous Paula captiva, he starts in directing with a minor film, Psexoanálisis. After several feature films, his masterpieces begin with La Patagonia rebelde (based on a book by Osvaldo Bayer on the events of the tragic Patagonia of 1921) and El muerto. Censorship also begins to intensify, especially during the time when Miguel Paulino Tato was censor of the Peronist government of María Estela Martínez.

Then The Night of the Pencils would arrive, another work of quality; The María Soledad case, about the murder of María Soledad Morales, and Una sombra ya pronto will be the winner of 5 Silver Condor awards and based on Osvaldo Soriano’s novel of the same name. A Antigua vida mía, based on the novel by Marcela Serrano, is followed by Ay, Juancito (2004), centered on the figure of Juan Duarte, the brother of Evita, wife of Juan Domingo Perón. This film won two Silver Condor Prizes for Best New Actor (Adrián Navarro) and Best Costumes (Horace Lannes) and was awarded at the Cairo International Film Festival.

On television he produced between 1994 and 1998 on Channel 13: Nine Moons, De poeta y de loco, Archivo negro and Laura y Zoe. He returned in 2012 with La Defensora, for Public TV.

In 1996 he received the Cóndor de Plata award for the trajectory given by the Association of Cinematographic Journalists of Argentina. In 2001 he received the Konex Award – Diploma for Meritro for his career as Producer in the last decade.

In 2013, he was declared an outstanding personality of the Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
