Heath Andrew Ledger (Perth, Australia, April 4, 1979 – New York, United States, January 22, 2008) was an Australian film and television actor.
After playing minor roles in movies and television shows during the 1990s, Ledger moved to the United States in 1998 to continue his career. His most notable works were made in the films 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), The Patriot (2000), Monster’s Ball (2001), A Knight’s Tale (2001), Brokeback Mountain (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008) In addition to performing as an actor, he produced and directed music videos, and aspired to be a film director.
For her performance as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, directed by Ang Lee, Ledger won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor in 2005 and the Australian Film Institute Award in the same category in 2006; he was also nominated for the Oscar in 2005, as well as for the BAFTA of 2006. Posthumously, he shared the “Robert Altman Independent Spirit Award” in 2007 with the rest of the cast, the director and the head of the auditions of the film I’m Not There, inspired by the life and songs of American songwriter and singer Bob Dylan. In the film, Ledger played a fictional actor named Robbie Clark, one of six characters representing different aspects of Dylan, was nominated and won several awards for his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, including an Oscar at best actor of distribution, a prize “Best Actor International” in 2008 (becoming the first actor to win that award posthumously), the Prize awarded by the Circle of Film Critics of Los Angeles of 2008,    as well as the 2009 Golden Globe in the category of best supporting actor. 
Died at 28 years of age, after an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.     A few months before his death, Ledger had finished filming from his penultimate role, as the Joker in The Dark Knight.    At the time of his death, on January 22, 2008, he had completed just under half of his work impersonating Tony in Terry Gilliam’s movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
