Harry Belafonte Short Bio
Harold George Belafonte, Jr. (born March 1, 1927 in New York, United States) is a musician, actor and social activist of Jamaican descent. Known as “the King of the calypso”, for popularizing this Caribbean musical style of the 50s. His best known song (which led him to the first place in the charts in 1957) may be Day-O (Banana boat song). He has made appearances on the Muppets Show and his music was used for the movie Beetlejuice.
Outside of his musical career, he has fought for human rights and humanitarian causes. He criticized George W. Bush’s policy for the Iraq War. He also participated in the Grammy winning song We Are the World (1985).
In the 60’s he was invited by the President of the Republic of Guinea-Conakry, Sekou Tourè, to create the 2nd National Ballet, the Djolibà National Ballet of Guinea Conakry.
Harry Belafonte has been a UNICEF ambassador since 1987 and is working on the rights of African children. In 2001 he launched a campaign against AIDS in South Africa.
In 2014 he was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Prize.
