Harry Anderson’s Biography

Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Anderson was doing street magic shows before becoming an actor. His big break came in 1984 when he was cast for the role of Judge Harold T. Harry Stone in the nine-season series Court of War (1984-1992). Between 1981 and 1985 he appeared eight times on the Saturday Night Live show, and was a recurring guest actor such as Harry the Hat Gittes on the Cheers sitcom. Also, in his magician role, he made numerous appearances on television shows, including the Harry Anderson’s Sideshow program in 1987. In 1985 he starred in a chapter of the series Tales from the Darkside called All a Clone by the Telephone.

In 1990 he was one of the protagonists of the television adaptation of the famous Stephen King novel, It, directed by Tommy Lee Wallace. From 1993 to 1997 he starred in the sitcom Dave’s World, based loosely on the life and humor columns of columnist Dave Barry. Along with his old friend Turk Pipkin he wrote a book called Games You Can not Lose: A Guide for Suckers, a collection of gags, cons, tricks and scams. Published in 1989 and reprinted in 2001, the title also contains a “Games you can not win” guide, seen from the perspective of a professional magician.

Longtime admirer of crooner Mel Tormé, he recited his praise at the singer’s funeral in 1999.

Anderson and his wife Elizabeth owned a small shop in the French Quarter of New Orleans called “Sideshow” where he offered “magic, curiosities and apocryphal (in the sense of fabulous).” In the summer of 2005 he also opened a nightclub, again in the French Quarter, called Oswald’s Speakeasy, located at 1331 Decatur Street. At the club, Anderson offered his own show called Wise Guy (the know-it-all).

In 2006 he appeared in the documentary Hexing a Hurricane, which deals with the six months after the passage of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. In August of that same year, Anderson and his wife decided to leave New Orleans because of the decline in tourism, the reelection of Mayor Ray Nagin and the general depression in which the city lived. They bought a house in Asheville, North Carolina and in October 2006 sold their house in New Orleans and the club Oswald’s Speakeasy.

In November 2008, he played himself in the chapter “A Meeting of Friends of the Court of the Guard” of the 30 Rock series, together with his former colleagues in the Court of Justice Markie Post and Charles Robinson.

Anderson has been married twice and has a son, Dash, and a daughter, Eva, fruit of his first marriage to Leslie Pollack.
