At birth he received the name of Francis Kane, but was orphaned and received the adopted name of Harold Rubin, when he spent his childhood in an orphanage. He was educated at the George Washington Institute and after leaving school, he worked in various trades. Gifted for trade, already at the age of twenty he had earned his first million dollars selling sugar for a multinational. However, at the beginning of World War II, he had lost his fortune and moved to Hollywood to work in Universal Studios.

His first book, Do not Love a Stranger (1948), was based on his own life in the orphanage and on the streets of New York and created great controversy and controversy for his graphic explanations of sexuality. He wrote it to win a $ 100 bet with a director of Universal Pictures and show him that he was capable of writing a script more interesting than what was done at the time in the movie mecca. Robbins got married five times. Since 1982 he needed to use a wheelchair, which did not stop him from writing.

He spent a lot of time living in the French Riviera and in Monte Carlo, until he died of respiratory problems on October 14, 1997. He was 81 years old. Since his death, several unpublished novels have been completed by other authors.
