Hal B. Wallis CBE (September 14, 1898 – October 5, 1986) was an American film producer.
His full name was Harold Brent Wallis , and he was born in Chicago, Illinois. In 1922 his family moved to Los Angeles, California, where he found work in the advertising department of Warner Bros. in 1923.
After a few years, Wallis was in charge of production tasks, eventually becoming Warners production manager. Throughout his long fifty years as a film producer, he took part in the production of more than 400 feature films. Among the many outstanding films he produced stands out Casablanca, one of the most important films in the history of Hollywood.
Wallis left Warner Bros. in 1944 after differences with Jack Warner over the acceptance of the Oscar to the best film for Casablanca. From then on he worked as an independent producer, enjoying considerable success, both from a commercial and artistic point of view. Among his financial successes are the comedies of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, as well as several films by Elvis Presley. In addition, he produced True Grit, a film in which John Wayne won the Oscar for best actor in 1969.
Hal Wallis received a total of 16 Oscar nominations for the best film, winning the prize for Casablanca in 1943. For the consistent quality of his productions he was twice awarded the Irving Thalberg Memorial Prize. He was also nominated for seven Golden Globes, winning the Best Film twice. In 1975 he was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Prize dedicated to his cinematographic career.
Hal Wallis was married twice, with the actresses Louise Fazenda (1927-1962) and Martha Hyer (1966-1986).
Hal B. Wallis died in 1986 in Rancho Mirage (California), because of a cardiac arrest. He was 88 years old. He was buried in a crypt in the Great Mausoleum of Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
