Guccio Gucci (Florence, Italy, March 26, 1881 – Milan, January 2, 1953) was a prestigious Italian fashion designer, founder of the Gucci fashion firm.
Guccio Gucci’s Biography
In 1906 he founds Gucci, which starts as a saddlery in Florence. For unknown reasons, Guccio moved to Paris and then to London, where he worked as Maitre at the Hotel Savoy. In 1920 he returns to his native Italy.
Open the first store with a small capital. After the Second World War, the firm was named Guccio Gucci srl, retaining the same name until Guccio’s death in 1953. In 1982 the name was changed to the signature by Guccio Gucci spA.
Guccio’s initial success was due to the quality of the craftsmanship of his skins. During the first years, his original clientele consisted of horsemen to whom he sold leather accessories. As their clientele became more sophisticated, the same thing happens to their product lines. It is also introduced in the sale of luxury luggage, becoming the equivalent of the Louis Vuitton firm in France.
His four sons (Aldo, Ugo, Vasco and Rodolfo) are in charge of expanding the firm and opening new stores in Florence, Rome and Milan. The peculiar Gucci double G’s were introduced to the market for the first time after the Second World War. He died in 1953, the year in which his sons Aldo and Rodolfo opened the first Gucci store abroad, in the city of New York.
