Gregory Benford (Mobile, Alabama (USA), January 30, 1941 (76 years) is a physicist and science fiction writer.
Ph.D. in physics from the University of California and professor of astrophysics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Irvine. Since 1988 he belongs to the Scientific Council of Consultants of NASA.
But the activity that has brought him world fame has been that of a science fiction writer, a task he shares with his teaching work since 1974 when he published his first story If the stars are gods in collaboration with Gordon Eklund, and that earned him the Nebula award. Later it would become his first novel, but his definitive leap to fame came with Cronopaisaje (1980), winner of the Nebula awards, John W. Campbell Memorial, BSFA and Australian Ditmar.
Benford, along with his partners David Brin and Greg Bear have been prizes and mentions during the eighties. Due to their similarity of themes and styles, they have been known as “the three B’s of science fiction”. This fame earned them to be chosen at the end of the nineties to continue the legendary saga Foundation of Isaac Asimov, in the so-called Second Trilogy of the Foundation, of which Benford made the first volume entitled The Fear of the Foundation (1997) . The unequal result of these novels has been worth not a few detractors.
His most ambitious work is the six novels of the Galactic Center Cycle. Benford describes the evolution of humanity over a period of tens of thousands of years in a galaxy marked by the ongoing struggle between organic civilizations and mechanical civilizations. Use the idea of ”berserker”: mechanical civilization that systematically tries to destroy all organic civilization by believing it dangerously unstable. This series of ambitious novels have been compared with those of Olaf Stapledon.
Notoriety is his “law of controversy” formulated in the award-winning Cronopaisaje (1980), where he proposes that “The passion associated with a discussion is inversely proportional to the amount of real information available.”
