Glenn Yarbrough (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, January 12, 1930-Nashville, Tennessee, August 11, 2016) was an American folk singer. He was the soloist singer of The Limeliters between 1959 and 1963, and also had a fertile solo musical career, recording with several record labels.

Glenn was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and studied at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland.

Musical career

In 1957 he was one of the first singers to record the traditional song «The House of the Rising Sun» for Elektra Records.

Among other successes of his career, Yarbrough put his voice to the animated versions of The Hobbit (1977) and The Return of the King (1980) produced by Rankin / Bass Productions, Inc., singing songs such as «The Road Goes Ever On »and« Frodo of the Nine Fingers ». He also sang the main theme in the Christmas special, The Christmas That Almost Was Not (1966).

The biggest hit among Glenn Yarbrough’s singles was “Baby the Rain Must Fall” (the main theme of the movie of the same title), which reached number 12 on pop charts, and 2 in easy ones. listening in 1965, and, according to the critics of Covington (Louisiana) was one of the 100 most successful songs of 1965.

His unique singing style is parodied in an episode of the cartoon series South Park entitled “The Death Camp of Tolerance.”


Glenn Yarbrough was also an accomplished sailor, who has owned (and inhabited) three unique yachts throughout his life:

  • the Armorel, built entirely in teak and still in use:
  • the Jubilee, in whose construction Glenn personally collaborated for three years; and
