Gilbert Roland’s Biography
Luis Antonio Damaso de Alonso was born in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, on December 11, 1905. At first he intended to become a bullfighter like his father. However, when his family moved to the United States, he became interested in film and was chosen at random for an extra role in the silent film: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1938). He chose his screen name by combining the names of his favorite actors, John Gilbert and Ruth Roland. For his graceful figure and fine face, he was often chosen for the stereotypical role of “Latin Lover”.
Roland’s first major role was in the silent romantic comedy The Plastic Age / La Edad de plástico (1925), with Clara Bow. The following year he personified Armando Duval in a version of the famous romantic tragedy: Camille / Margarita Gautier (1926) where Norma Talmadge was the protagonist and with whom, Roland, was sentimentally involved. Together they starred in several productions. In the early ’30s, with the arrival of sound movies, Roland appeared in several adaptations to Spanish American films, starring in romantic roles.
In the late ’40s and early’ 50s, critics began to take note of his performance and was praised for his supporting roles, as in the films: We Were Strangers / Breaking the Strings / We Were Strangers ( 1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), Thunder Bay / Black Bay (1953), and Cheyenne autumn / The Twilight of the Cheyenne / The Great Battle (1964).
He appeared in a series of films in the mid-forties, as the popular character “Cisco Kid”. He personified Hugo da Silva, the agnostic (and totally fictitious) friend of the three children shepherds in The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima / The Message of Fatima (1952), based on the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, in 1917 The following year, he starred in the epic adventure film Beneath the 12-Mile Reef / Duel on the Bottom of the Sea (1953), impersonating a Greek-American sponge fisherman. His last appearance in the cinema was in the western Barbarosa (1982).
Gilbert Roland got married twice. His first marriage was with the actress Constance Benett from 1941 to 1945: they had two daughters, but ended up getting divorced because the actor was having an affair with the also actress Norma Talmadge. His second marriage, in 1954, was with Guillermina Cantú: they had no children, but the marriage lasted until his death in 1994.
Gilbert Roland died at the age of 88, cancer victim, on May 15, 1994, in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA. His remains were cremated and his ashes were thrown into the sea.
