Giannina Braschi (San Juan, Puerto Rico, February 5, 1953) is a Puerto Rican writer, author of the postmodern classic “The Empire of Dreams” (1988), the celebrated bilingual novel ” Yo-Yo Boing! (1998), and the declaration of independence entitled “United States of Banana” (2011). According to the Library of Congress in the US, Braschi is “one of the most revolutionary voices in Latin American literature today.” His originality is characterized by his revolutionary fantasy and his linguistic and structural renovations.His work, written in three languages- Spanish, Spanglish, and English-expresses the cultural process of nearly 50 million Hispanics in the US With the three languages, Braschi explores the political options of Puerto Rico-nation, colony, and state-or in the words of the author “wishy, wishy- washy, and washy.” In his new book “United States of Banana,” Braschi describes the “wishy” option as the independence of Puerto Rico, the “wishy-washy” option as the Commonwealth, and the possibility “washy” as the statehood that would turn the zone into the 51st state of the United States.
Giannina Braschi’s Biography
Born in San Juan and based in New York City, Giannina Braschi was a privileged girl. She studied at the School of Mothers and left the country at age 18, after being a tennis champion, one of the founding members of the Children’s Choir of San Juan and even modeled. She went to study literature and philosophy in France, England, and Spain where he dedicated himself to the golden age in Spanish literature. He earned a Ph.D. in literature from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, in 1980. The professor has written about Cervantes, Garcilaso, Machado, Lorca, and Bécquer, and has taught at the universities of Rutgers, Colgate, and the City from New York. Braschi lived very close to the so-called ground zero of Manhattan in September 2001 because he was studying the symbolisms of the Statue of Liberty and wanted to see the monument often. After the attacks, the author was inspired to analyze the migratory waves that have reached the city and the relationship of the formerly called “banana republics” with the United States.
