George R R Martin’s Biography

George R. R. Martin is the oldest of three brothers. He grew up in a working family, his father was a stevedore of Italian-German descent, and his mother, of Irish descent. From childhood he became interested in reading and became a precocious writer of stories. Later he studied journalism at the Northwestern University in Evanston (Illinois), where he graduated in 1971. After finishing his studies, he performs the substitute social benefit (he is a conscientious objector), runs chess tournaments and works as a journalism professor in the Clarke Institute in Dubuque, Iowa (1976-1978).

Martin was a prolific author of short works of fiction in the seventies and his work was awarded with several Hugo and Nebula awards. At the end of this decade he began to publish his first novels being one of the most popular the first of them: Death of the Light (Dying of the Light, 1977). This success allows him to dedicate himself exclusively to literature, where he mixes the genres of science fiction, fantasy and terror.

After a short marriage with Gale Burnick (1975-1979), he begins to combine writing with his work in Hollywood, motivated in part by the poor performance of his fourth novel The Rag of Armageddon (The Armageddon Rag, 1983). During the eighties and the first nineties he worked as a screenwriter for several television series (The Twilight Zone, 1986 and The Beauty and the Beast, 1987) and as editor of the series of anthologies of alternative history about World War II, Wild Cards . In 1987 he published Los viajes de Tuf (Tuf Voyaging, 1986), a collection of science fiction stories, considered one of the most outstanding works of his first stage.

In 1996 Martin leaves Hollywood and retires to Santa Fe (New Mexico), where he returns to the world of literature starting with the novel Game of Thrones (A Game of Thrones, 1996) the cycle of novels Song of Ice and Fire , with which he obtains great success of criticism and sales. In 2011 he married his former lover Parris McBride. In 2013, he acquired the Jean Cocteau cinema in Santa Fe and the Coffee House, closed since 2006, and restored and modernized them, transforming the latter into a coffee-museum with itinerant art exhibitions. Ideologically democratic, has always defended the presidents of this party and its policies. Currently, Martin is writing the sixth book of the saga Song of Ice and Fire, Winds of Winter. This saga of novels is, without doubt, the one that has catapulted him to the top of his career as a writer.
