He was born in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain. His father Arthur Holder was a sales representative and his mother Louise De Frense Holder was a housewife. Geoffrey Holder was an actor, choreographer, dancer, director, painter, costume designer and singer. He was known for his height, he is 6’6. “He attended Tranquility School and then went to the Queens Royal College High School in Port of Spain, Geoffrey was one of four brothers, and his brother, Boscoe Holder, taught him painting. When she was seven, she started dancing with this brother, dancing for the company of her brother, Holder Dance Company, and in 1952 the choreographer Agnes De Mille observed Geoffrey dancing in Santo Tomas, Virgin Islands of the United States. and she invited him to New York to teach at the dance school ‘Katherine Dunham’ for two years.
In 1955 he married a dancer, Carmen De Lavallade, who met her when they were in the theater “House of Flowers”, a musical by Harold Arlen. They lived in New York and had a son named Leo Anthony Lamont Holder in 1962. He began his acting career in the British film “All Night Long.”
Later, in 1973, he would appear in the James Bond movie saga, in the movie “Live and Let Die (film)”, playing the voodoo god of death, Barón Samedi, this being one of his most outstanding and recognized roles.
In 1975 Holder won two Tony awards for direction and costume design. He was the first non-African black man to be nominated in this category. In 1982 it was the voice of Ray in “Bear In The Big Blue House”. At 84, he was living in New York with his wife of 59 years. He died at age 84, on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Mount Sinai St. Luke Hospital in New York because of complications from pneumonia.
