Jerome Silberman , known as Gene Wilder (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June 11, 1933-Stamford, Connecticut, August 29, 2016), was an actor , American director and screenwriter known for having appeared in some of Mel Brooks’ most important works, such as Blazing Saddles, The Producers and Young Frankenstein, as well as other films such as Willy Wonka & amp; the Chocolate Factory, The Chicago Express, The Little Prince or Bonnie and Clyde.
Gene Wilder’s Biography
Born in Milwaukee to a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, Wilder studied acting at the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity. He graduated in 1955 and later served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. There he served as a paramedic in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at Valley Forge Army Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
Subsequently, Wilder worked in the theater as well as being a limo driver and fencing teacher. His career as an actor was fostered in some off-Broadway productions such as The Complaisant Lover and Roots (1961), for which he received the Clarence Derwent awards. In 1964, he had the opportunity to be chosen to interpret Mother Courage and Her Children with Anne Bancroft. The actress liked Wilder and talked about him to comedian Mel Brooks.
Wilder’s big-screen debut was with Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde (1967). He later became Leo Bloom in The Producers (1968), along with Zero Mostel, and Willy Wonka in A Fantasy World (1971) and Dr. Friederich Frankenstein in Young Frankenstein (1974).
At the end of the 1970s and in the 1980s, he appeared in four films together with Richard Pryor, in which he was one of the most famous interracial comedy couples in the history of cinema. They performed together in The Chicago Express (1976), Locos de remate (1981), Do not Screw Me ThatDo not See You (1989) and Do not Lie to MeBelieve You (1991).
In 1982 Wilder starred in Hanky Panky, where he met Gilda Radner and with whom he married in 1984, a relationship that lasted until the death of the actress (due to ovarian cancer) in 1989. His death affected to Wilder, who founded the Gilda’s Club association in his memory and together with Karen Boyer became one of the biggest activists in ovarian cancer awareness. In 1998 Wilder published the book Gilda’s Disease, where he explains his experiences with his third wife. A year later, Wilder retired from the film world to devote himself to humanitarian activities.
In 2005, Wilder published his memoirs under the name Kiss Me Like A Stranger and in 2007 he did the same with his first novel, centered on the First World War, under the title My French Whore.
Wilder, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, died at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, on August 29, 2016, due to complications from the disease, his family said in a statement.
