Gavin Harrison (born May 28, 1963 in Harrow, London) is an English drummer. He is currently a member of the English progressive rock bands Porcupine Tree, which he joined in 2002, and King Crimson, the latter as second drummer, accompanying Pat Mastelotto since 2008. He has also collaborated with other artists such as Renaissance, Claudio Baglioni, Iggy Pop, Blackfield, Franco Battiato, Jakko Jakszyk, Lisa Stansfield and even Manolo Garcia.
Gavin Harrison began playing drums at age 6, influenced by his father Bobby, jazz trumpeter and drummer. At age 11 Gavin studied with studio drummer Joe Hodson, who taught him how to read and write music as well as a solid grip and time techniques. He started playing professionally at 16, when he left school, to this day.
His studies continued with Dave Cutler, a Berklee graduate. Gavin basically learned only from then on. At 19, Gavin joined the progressive rock band Renaissance and made his first tour of America. Later, in 1986, he joined Iggy Pop accompanying him on a world tour.
Around this time Gavin began working as a studio drummer in London and recorded successful albums for Sam Brown, Black, Gail Ann Dorsey and Tom Robinson. He also met local guitarist Jakko M. Jakszyk and together they formed the critically acclaimed Dizrhythmia project, along with bassist Danny Thompson and Indian percussionist Pandit Dinesh.
In addition, he started a long and fruitful collaboration with Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin participating in their albums since the 1980s.
In the 1990s, Gavin joined British band Incognito and recorded one of the most successful albums of his life with the single Always. Soon he was invited to play and record in Japan with Yasuaki Shimizu and Italy to record with Alice, Eugenio Finardi, Fiorella Mannoia, Franco Battiato, Raf. Gavin began to generate real interest in the Italian scene and began working with renowned artists such as Claudio Baglioni in 1992, along with bassist Tony Levin.
After the Italian tour, Gavin was invited to join Level 42 for his last tour and to record a live album on the last night of that tour. Later that year, he toured Brazil with jazz guitarist Heitor Pereira.
1995 saw Gavin working with bassist Mick Karn of the Japan band. With them he recorded the album Micks The Tooth Mother that they presented in a short European tour. Later, Mick returned the favor and recorded with Gavin his first album, Sanity & amp; Gravity, in which Dave Stewart, Heitor Pereira, Richard Barbieri, Gary Sanctuary and Jakko also play.
He returns frequently to Italy to work with Eros Ramazzotti and Claudio Baglioni again and to also do more work as a session musician. In 1997 Gavin began working with British soul diva Lisa Stansfield, traveling around the world. While continuing to work in the UK and co-producing the artist Shooter for Sony.
In 1998 Gavin plays with Claudio Baglioni at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, in front of 92,000 people; and in San Siro, Milan, before 85,000 people, to later continue the tour in several football stadiums in Italy.
In 2000 Gavin became musical director of UK garage legends like Artful Dodger and during this time he started working with the highly acclaimed soul artist Lewis Taylor. After Gavin played on tours with Go WEST and Lisa Stansfield.
At the beginning of 2002 Gavin was invited to join Porcupine Tree and has played with them since then – recording the studio albums In Absentia (2002), Deadwing (2005), Fear of a Blank Planet (2007) and The Incident (2009) and doing several tours in the US and Europe.
In 2005 he met Robert Fripp from a collaboration with Porcupine Tree and he proposed his incorporation to King Crimson, a group he has been part of since 2007.
