Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux (Paris, May 6, 1868 – Nice, April 15, 1927) was a French journalist and writer, famous for his horror and crime novels such as The phantom of the opera (Le Fantôme de l’opéra, 1910), The mystery of the yellow room (Mystère de la chambre jaune, 1907) and its continuation The perfume of the lady in black (Le parfum de la Dame en noir, 1908).
He worked in the newspapers L’Écho de Paris and Le Matin and traveled as a reporter in Sweden, Finland, England, Egypt, Korea and Morocco. In Russia he covered the early stages of the Bolshevik revolution. Apart from his work as a journalist, he had time to write more than forty novels that were published by installments in Paris newspapers.
Gaston Leroux went to school in Normandy, studied law in Paris and graduated in 1889. In 1890 he started working at the newspaper L’Écho, in Paris, as a theater critic and reporter. He achieved fame for a report he did, in which he passed himself off as an anthropologist who studied the prisons of Paris in order to enter the cell of a convict who, according to Gastón, had been unjustly condemned. He had two children, Alfred Gaston and his daughter was the singer Madeleine Aile.Leroux died at the age of 59 due to uremia, his remains rest at the Château du cimetière, in Nice, France.
